Game changing technology for a network-wide railway automation and digitalization based on ETCS
In the previous years, the ERTMS deployment around Europe is increasing constantly. ETCS, as the dedicated key technology for train protection and borderless railway traffic inside the European Union, is gaining more and more acceptance. While ETCS provides interoperability, safety and sustainability, ATO completes ETCS with additional benefits like performance increase, energy savings and capacity increase. In Mass-Transit, ATO has already become an established standard, whereas the time for ATO in Mainline starts now - with Siemens as a proven partner.

The ATO overall system consist of an On-board ATO system (ATO-OB) and a Trackside ATO system (ATO-TS). The ATO-TS is additionally connected to a Traffic Management System (TMS), which is key for an optimal and high beneficial train control.

In 2021, Siemens will launch the first ATO-application in Germany. The digital S-Bahn Hamburg will be the blueprint for future ATO projects.

While the driver supervised ATO technology is about to be rolled out and Siemens is already offering customized migration solutions in this area, work is currently underway to implement fully automated operation.
