Clean railcars – clean cities. From 2021 onwards, emission limits are to be tightened in accordance with a recently passed EU regulation. HJS can already supply the products required to meet these standards today. They are set to be exhibited at Innotrans in Berlin.

The railway industry is facing massive challenges. Modern trains need modern drive systems free from diesel exhausts that harm people with their toxic nitrogen oxides and soot particulates. HJS provides solutions and systems to reduce emissions and meet stringent standards. They are to be presented at Innotrans trade fair in Berlin from 18 to 21 September, 2018.
HJS delivers innovations all along the line; the OEM develops customized solutions for small auxiliary drive systems to large main propulsion units with outputs greater than 1000 kW. This German company has been an OE supplier of exhaust emissions treatment technology to renowned engine manufacturers and manufacturers of track-laying machinery for many years and has more than 40 years of extensive system competence. Its range of emissions systems for diesel, petrol and gas-powered engines is complemented by a comprehensive service and aftermarket network.
EU regulation tightens emissions limits
Especially on the railways, it is important to satisfy new requirements and to trust in the very latest clean-air technology. From 2021 onwards, emission limits are to be tightened up in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/1628, which stipulates Stage V-compliance for all engine outputs. It affects locomotives and railcars (specifying a limit value and number of particulates), even ones with a power output below 130 kW. In order to meet the requirements of Stage V in the case of railcar engines, HJS is putting its faith in SCRT® technology.
In addition to supplying original equipment, HJS also retrofits emission systems to road-rail vehicles and track-laying machinery, in cooperation with notable sales and service partners. Thanks to SCRT® technology, pollutant emissions are cut to a minimum. Retrofitting this equipment enables Stage II engines to comply with the limits prescribed in Stage IV or V.
How SCRT® technology works
Retrofit SCRT® technology is based on a CRT particulate filter that filters out particulates right down to the detection limit and AdBlue® technology. An SCR module is used to reduce gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx). SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction. To convert the nitrogen oxides, AdBlue® solution is admixed to the exhaust gases downstream of the particulate filter. This is converted into ammonia (NH3) in the hot exhaust gases, which in turn reacts with the nitrogen oxides to form harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

As co-owner of the SCRT® patent, HJS presents a retrofit solution with active thermal management. This patent-pending solution of the renowned systems supplier HJS is of genuine OE quality and has undergone a rigorous test programme. Thanks to active thermal management, the system is reliable even when operating under demanding low-load conditions or shunting. Two networked actuators ensure that SCRT® technology always achieves maximum possible NOx reduction and robust particulate filter regeneration – without influencing the engine.
