IHI Corporation is a comprehensive heavy-industry manufacturer working to create value for customers in four main areas—Resource, Energy and Environment; Social Infrastructure and Offshore Facilities; Industrial Systems and General-purpose Machinery; and Aero Engine, Space and Defence.

IHI’s history extends back to 1853 to the establishment of Ishikawajima Shipyard, Japan’s first modern shipbuilding facility. The company has since played a key role in Japan’s modernization, including by leveraging its shipbuilding technology in new areas, such as heavy machinery manufacturing, bridge building, plant construction and aero-engine production.

The name IHI Corporation was adopted in 2007 to help strengthen the company’s global brand. Currently the IHI group currently consists of 29,659 employees over 8 domestic and 13 overseas branches and offices, 7 works and 395 affiliates and subsidiaries.

IHI is deeply committed to contributing to society through technology, combining diverse engineering capabilities to meet expanding global needs for energy, urbanization and industrialization, and transportation efficiency. In 2000, IHI significantly expanded its involvement in Japan’s space program when it acquired Nissan Motor’s Aerospace Division, a pioneer in solid-fuel rocket development in Japan. In other areas the IHI group reached a total production volume of 50 million turbo chargers in 2015 and has constructed the Osman Gazi Bridge across Izmit Bay in western Turkey, the fourth large suspension bridge in the world, which was announced open on July 1st 2016.

In the transport technology market, IHI has developed the 3D Laser Radar (3DLR) level crossing obstacle detection system. Installing the 3DLR system at level crossings in order to detect in real time objects such as vehicles stranded in the path of an oncoming train significantly reduces the risk of train-obstacle collision accidents within the level crossing. To-date, over 2,000 units of the 3DLR have been supplied worldwide and IHI continues expanding the capabilities and applications of the 3DLR and exploring future sensor business fields.
