Garrandale – Increasing Capacity with a Greener RailGarrandale Rail is the UK’s leading supplier of railway Specialist Rail Depot Equipment, delivering projects across the globe, capable of responding quickly and efficiently to the needs of the rail industry. Our core business is the design, manufacture and maintenance of train wash plants, rolling stock controlled emissions toilet emptying systems, fuelling stations, lubricating and monitoring systems and sanding systems.
Always looking to new, sustainable & cost saving technologies. Garrandale currently has 2 major R&D projects underway, a Cleartrak Toilet System for processing toilet waste on-board trains and a Robotic System for servicing trains.
Cleartrak - Our experience in manufacturing and installing CET tanks on trains, retrofitting CET tanks on older trains and designing, providing and installing the depot equipment used to empty them has given us a real insight into the inefficiencies implicit in this essential process.
In association with Cranfield University, we are in the ‘building of a prototype’ phase of a new on-board waste processing system for trains. Our system will separate liquid from solid waste, process liquids for reuse in flushing and handwashing and process solids to render them not only inert but a fraction of the original mass.
With a prototype launch date of 2021, the Cleartrak system will process both liquid and solid waste from toilets & washrooms transforming it into clean waste that can be either safely reused in toilet flushing & washbasins or discharged into the rail track environment. This will significantly reduce the requirement for rolling stock to be frequently taken out of passenger service to refill water tanks and empty waste tanks and in so doing, reduce disruption to the operation of the railways.
This ground-breaking system will be designed to interface with existing rolling stock toilet wash room systems and power supplies.
Robotics - The servicing of trains is a time-consuming, costly and logistically complex process. In addition certain servicing activities, such as cab front washing, can pose a health and safety risk to operatives especially in electric depots.
Garrandale, in conjunction with Cranfield University, are working on a robotic system that can clean a cab front effectively, efficiently and safely.
Garrandale’s range of Smart SRDE includes carriage wash systems, fuelling & AdBlue stations, controlled emission toilets and lubricating and monitoring systems. These systems are embedded with intelligent sensors, which provide data that can be used to accurately predict future operational failures, thereby preventing costly, unscheduled disruptions and limit downtime of the asset for as short a time as possible.
Garrandale Rail is investing heavily in research and development and collaborating with industry specialists from across Europe, to build a business that will deliver new sustainable technologies for tomorrow’s Railways today.
